I’ve wondered before if this might be related to Solondz appreciation for Woody. This is probably unsavory speculation, but the character Solondz portrays in his first feature “Fear, Anxiety, and Depression” is like a send up to Allen. As the accusations against Allen came to light and the story snowballed in the 90s, I am sure some dedicated fans had issues reconciling this fact with the artist they so admired. Solondz’s portrayals of these characters are complicated, and I never got the impression he was condemning them, per se. If anything it seemed like an attempt at humanization. It can leave people with the feeling of like “is this a brave artistic move or are these red flags” and so I think many just reel and try to forget about his movies or ignore them altogether. But it could be an artistic attempt at processing this kind of devastating contradiction hitting you in early adulthood.
"I don’t know what to do with all the stuff about pedophilia"-something solondz has probably said when writing his scripts
